Often, yes. EMO ($279 to $369) and Eilik (about $149) are both desk companions with a screen face, and the $130 to $220 between them buys one thing: EMO talks and listens over Wi-Fi, Eilik does not. Eilik reacts to touch, sound and a second Eilik, shows dozens of moods, dances, and needs no app, no network and no account. EMO adds voice, a camera that recognises you, weather and alarms, and an app that most of its complaints are about. If you want a robot that answers, EMO is the one; if you want a robot that reacts, Eilik does it for less than half the price and nothing can switch it off.

What does EMO do that Eilik cannot?

Answer. EMO hears its name, replies in a synthetic voice, tells you the weather, sets an alarm, plays music, recognises your face and reacts differently to you than to a stranger. That is a real difference in daily life: EMO is something you talk to between emails. The price of it is dependence: every one of those features runs through Wi-Fi and the Living.AI app, and independent reviewers score EMO down for app and support problems, a two-hour battery and English-only voice. The character is loved; the plumbing is the complaint.

What does Eilik do that EMO cannot?

Work forever without anyone's servers. Eilik has no camera, no microphone connected to anything, no app and no account, which means nothing to set up, nothing to update and nothing to lose if Energize Lab has a bad year. It also does the one thing owners find most charming: two Eiliks react to each other, and the smaller Eiliko was made for exactly that. What it cannot do is understand you, and reviewers note the repertoire feels complete after a few weeks. For a child's desk or a workplace where cameras are not welcome, that is a feature, and it is why Eilik sits on the offline shortlist in Do robot pets need Wi-Fi, an app or a subscription?.

Who is each one for?

EMO: one adult who wants a talking companion on the desk and is fine with an app. Eilik: anyone who wants a reaction rather than a conversation, a child's room, a shared office, or a first robot pet at a price that makes a second one thinkable. We compared the two makers' pages and independent reviews: the facts in the table are not disputed anywhere; the disagreement is only over how much EMO's app problems should count, and that depends on how patient you are with apps.

If what you actually want is the robot that moves through a room, neither is it; that is Loona, compared in Loona vs EMO: which one, and for whom?. All three side by side are in our compare tool, and the price rungs are in How much does a robot pet really cost, with the subscriptions?.

FAQ

Is Eilik better than EMO?

They are different: EMO talks and listens over Wi-Fi, Eilik reacts without speech and needs no connection. Independent reviewers call Eilik the value pick for a desk and EMO the more capable but more frustrating one.

Does Eilik talk?

No. Eilik makes sounds and shows expressions; it does not speak or understand words.

Does Eilik need Wi-Fi or an app?

No. It works out of the box with no network, app or account.

Is EMO worth the extra money over Eilik?

If you want voice, face recognition and alarms, yes. If you want a reacting companion, no.

Can two Eiliks interact?

Yes; they react to each other, and the smaller Eiliko was designed as a companion unit.
