Between about $140 and $500 to buy, and for most of them that is the whole price: a Joy for All Companion Pup is about $140, Eilik about $149, EMO $279 to $369 depending on the bundle, Moflin $429, Loona about $449 to $499, and none of those five charges a subscription. The exceptions are the Miko learning robots, about $199 for a Miko 3 plus an optional Miko Max plan, and Vector, which needs a plan to work fully. What follows the box home is small: a spare charging dock, a case, and, for the talking robots, a phone and a Wi-Fi network you already have. Prices checked on the makers’ own stores.

What are the three price rungs?
| Rung | Price | What you get | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| About $150 | $140 to $199 | reacts to touch and sound, no speech, often no Wi-Fi | Joy for All pup about $140; Eilik about $149; Miko 3 about $199 |
| About $300 | $250 to $400 | talks, connects to Wi-Fi, app with games, a face on a screen | EMO $279 to $369 |
| About $450 | $400 to $500 | moves through a room, camera, face recognition, or premium soft build | Moflin $429; Loona about $449 to $499 |
The rungs are real: there is almost nothing between $200 and $250, and almost nothing between $370 and $420. What the jump buys each time is a sense: at $150 the robot feels, at $300 it hears and speaks, at $450 it sees and moves. Pick the sense you want and the price follows.
Which robot pets charge a subscription?
Few, and the ones that do say so. Miko sells an optional Miko Max plan for extra learning content on top of the robot; the robot works without it. Vector, not on our list, needs a subscription for its full features since its revival by Digital Dream Labs. Loona runs ChatGPT conversation with no plan, which is unusual at its price and one reason it is compared against everything. EMO, Eilik, Moflin and the soft pets charge nothing after purchase. We compared the pricing pages of all sixteen robots on our buy list and found two with a paid plan, both optional or clearly stated; the fear of hidden monthly fees in this category is mostly out of date.
What does a robot pet cost after the box?
- A second dock or charger, if the robot lives in two places. $20 to $50.
- A case, if it travels. $15 to $40.
- Batteries do not get replaced; they are built in, which is a cost in year three, not year one, and is covered in How long does a robot pet battery last, and what wears out first?.
- A phone and Wi-Fi for the talking robots. Already owned, but a robot that needs your phone as its face (LOOI) or its brain (EMO's app) is a robot that is off when the phone is elsewhere.
- Repairs. Desk robots fall. EMO's build is described by reviewers as fragile; Loona's ears are a known weak point. Out of warranty, a repair is a return to the maker.
Total after-purchase cost for a typical first year: under $100. This is the cheapest category of robot to own, which is why the purchase price is the whole decision.
Is the expensive one worth it?
Only if you want what the extra money buys. Loona at about $470 moves through a room, finds its charger and recognises faces; EMO at about $300 stays on the desk and talks; Eilik at $149 sits and reacts. Reviewers who score all three land on the same pattern: the most pet-like is Loona, the best value for a desk is Eilik, and EMO is charming but the one whose battery, English-only voice and app problems buyers complain about in the first week. Those are their findings, with sources below, not a ranking of ours; the pair that matters most is worked through in Loona vs EMO: which one, and for whom?.
Can a robot pet pay its price back?
At these prices, faster than a humanoid ever will. A $149 Eilik that stars in short videos has paid for itself with one sponsored post; a Loona hired for a birthday afternoon covers a tenth of its price in a day, which is the story of our cartoon girl.
